The inner-city site is well placed for parents working in town, and is easily accessible (via Regent Street and Rangitane Street gateways) for parents travelling in from surrounding areas.
The main site, the original Fitzherbert homestead, was purchased on behalf of the school by a group of forward-thinking parents of the time, in 1955, and has served the school well. With the acquisition of neighbouring properties the land available for classrooms, specialist facilities and play areas has been steadily expanded.
In the late 1990’s, the historic house was moved forward to the Broadway frontage, and now comprises the administrative hub of the school. Eight purpose-built classrooms were built at this time. Opening out onto covered landings, and surrounding the sheltered central cobblestone courtyard and outdoor stage, the classroom design and layout reinforces the strong sense of community evident in our family-focussed culture.
Our spacious circular library and the upper-level art room, bathed in light, efficiently link the administration building with the classroom landings.
By 2003 a full-sized gymnasium had been constructed, becoming the backbone of our strong PE and sporting programmes, and providing a generous hall for assemblies and other whole-school functions. Separate buildings are provided for the specialist science laboratory and the Lyn Gregg Suite, used for class and music lessons.
In 2019, following a successful community fundraising effort, a stunning all-weather artificial turf surface was established. With generous mobile equipment also provided, the Keiller Turf allows for specialist sports coaching on site, and additional recreational activities for the children’s break-time games. Extensive use is also made of the city’s hockey turfs, specialist sporting stadiums, swimming pools, community athletics track and the playing fields which surround the school. Similarly, the school is within easy reach of the city library, museums and art gallery.
We are excited that our science lab weather station is now on-line! Our Year 5 & 6 students have already started to use the weather station as an additional resource to support their moon-phases diary task. In future, we will use the data that our weather station is generating in our other curriculum areas such as Mathematics, and in clubs such as the Garden Club and Science Club.
